How to Print AI Conversations Without Losing Formatting

1. Copy the answer you want to keep

Use the answer’s Copy control, or select the part of the conversation you need. Text Edit MD accepts the text, Markdown, or supported HTML supplied by the clipboard. It does not sign in to your AI account or automatically collect the rest of the conversation.

This workflow applies to copied answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and other tools. Their copy controls may include different information. If you need both your questions and the replies, copy those sections in order or open a Markdown export containing them.

2. Paste into Text Edit MD

On the welcome screen choose Paste copied text. You can also use Ctrl+Shift+V to paste into a new document, or Ctrl+V to add content at the insertion point. Open a saved .md file directly if you already have one.

If the formatting is missing

Switch to Source and check whether headings, lists, table columns, and code fences are present. If the source application copied only visible plain text, the missing structure cannot be inferred reliably. Ask for Markdown source and copy the code block or download its .md file.

You can ask: Return this answer as Markdown source in one code block. Keep the headings, tables, math delimiters, code-language labels, and real image URLs. If the answer contains code fences itself, an outer fence of four backticks can enclose ordinary three-backtick blocks.

3. Check the details before printing

Read through the answer and edit it directly. Check the equations, tables, and pictures. Markdown footnotes appear as numbered references and print as endnotes. Code language labels allow syntax coloring.

When the app reports linked pictures, choose Import linked images to embed them. A missing or private image URL may fail; the app shows the reason and keeps the reference. See the guide to missing images.

4. Preview the pages, then print or save PDF

Choose Print or press Ctrl+P. Adjust print text size independently from reading size. Choose Letter or A4 paper, narrow/normal/wide margins, and one, two, or three columns. Check the paginated preview and then choose Print… or Save PDF….

Keep an editable copy too

Save as .md when you want to edit the content later. Imported pictures are stored inside that Markdown document; PDFs preserve the rendered page. Use Copy full / Ctrl+C to carry the Markdown source and formatted HTML to another application. Copy simple / Ctrl+Shift+C gives you readable text without embedded picture data. The receiving application decides which clipboard format it accepts.

What this workflow does—and what needs a separate step

Text Edit MD formats the content you supply. It cannot recover an image address the original Copy operation omitted, retrieve hidden conversation history, or turn an interactive app into a printed document. For formulas and diagrams, see the supported Markdown-to-PDF workflow.
